Trade plates allow motor traders to move vehicles that are temporarily in their possession without having to tax and register them first. The use of a trade plate is limited to a few key motor trade activities including:
• Vehicle collection and delivery
• Vehicle demonstration
• The movement of a vehicle to an auction for sale
• Driving the vehicle to a testing centre or a breakers yard
• Road testing
That really depends on the business you run and the type of cover you need. Trade plate policies exclude social, domestic and pleasure use, but does provide you with valuable movement cover on non-registered or taxed vehicles. Under the provisions of the policy, we can also include your everyday vehicles and can also provide social, domestic and pleasure use on your permanently owned vehicles.
For those who hold trade plates, you must provide us with the trade plate numbers so we can disclose them to the Motor Insurance Database (MID). Trade plates are not sufficient when delivering or collecting vehicles from abroad.
We tailor our trade plate insurance cover to meet the specific requirements of your business. That can include office, premises and storage cover as part of a comprehensive trade plate insurance policy, and we can arrange public and employers’ liability if required. We can also provide trade plate cover for new businesses, whether you’re buying and selling cars from home or operate full-time from a business premises.
The additional risks we can cover include:
• Full road risks delivery by transporter, trailer or trade plate
• Storage of vehicles
• Engineering inspection and breakdown
• Tools, equipment & stock
