What is Taxi Insurance?

Very simply, taxi insurance is a specialist policy that’s designed to protect you and your taxi against the particular risks you face. Car insurance does not provide the level of cover that’s legally required to operate a taxi. So, it’s essential you have a policy that’s been created specifically for this type of use.

Taxi insurance provides a far greater level of cover than car insurance. For example, with taxi insurance, you can choose to cover the vehicle, the driver, members of the public, the passengers you carry and their property too. For that reason, it does tend to cost more than a car insurance policy, which is exactly why it pays to work with a specialist broker who knows the industry inside-out.

Taxis cover far more miles than the average vehicle and are often driven at unsocial times and in built-up areas. The vehicles can often be larger than normal cars and there’s also a far greater chance of personal injury if you are involved in an accident due to the number of passengers you carry.

As a taxi driver, your vehicle is your livelihood. If your vehicle is off the road even for a few days then it will have a direct impact on your earnings, the consequences of which can be extremely damaging. Buying a taxi insurance policy that provides cover against the specific risks you face will help to protect you and your business and give you peace of mind.

If you work as a taxi driver then it is a legal requirement that you have a specialist taxi insurance policy in place. Standard car insurance will not provide the cover you need.

What Different Types of Taxi Insurance Are There?

There are three main types of taxi insurance policy. That includes:

  • Policy only – This is the most basic form of taxi insurance which, more often than not, will also be the cheapest.
  • Named driver – Named driver cover is ideal if you own one taxi and are the only driver.

As with a standard car insurance policy, you can also choose the level of cover you want, from third-party all the way up to fully comprehensive.

  • Third party only – You will be covered for any damaged caused by you or another driver insured on your policy to someone else’s vehicle, property or person. However, you and your vehicle will not be covered.
  • Third party, fire and theft – As well as covering third parties, their vehicles and their property from damage caused by your taxi, this policy will also pay out if your taxi is stolen or damaged by fire.
  • Fully comprehensive – Fully comprehensive cover provides the most extensive level of protection you can buy. It includes all of the cover listed above as well as paying out for any damage to your vehicle or an injury to yourself.

Public or Private Hire?

Another essential consideration when choosing your taxi insurance policy is to specify whether you want a policy for a public hire or private hire taxi.

  • Public hire – Public hire taxis can pick up passengers from taxi ranks and be hailed by passengers as you drive by without being pre-booked.
  • Private hire – Private hire taxis must be booked in advance.

Is Public Liability Cover an Essential Part of Taxi Insurance?

If you’re a self-employed or contract taxi driver, you won’t have the protection of a public liability insurance policy to reduce the risks you face. It may seem like something you don’t need, but all it takes is for one person to be involved in an incident to lead to a claim that could potentially cost you thousands of pounds.

For example, taxi drivers who transport children to and from school are legally liable for their safety until they enter the school gates. Similarly, if you work on local authority or council contracts, it is often a prerequisite that you have public liability insurance in place.

What Policy Extras are Available?

As well as choosing the type and level of taxi insurance cover you require, there are also a number of extras you may wish to consider that allow you to tailor your policy to meet your specific needs. That includes things like:

  • Taxi breakdown cover – Taxi breakdown cover can be added to taxi insurance policies to recover your vehicle and get you back to work more quickly in the event of a breakdown. It may also include onward travel to get your passengers to their destination.
  • Personal use cover – Rather than having a separate car for personal use, you may choose to include personal use cover in your taxi insurance policy so it can be used to transport you and your family.
  • Unlimited mileage cover – Some taxi insurance policies set a maximum limit for the mileage you can drive in a year. However, this can be restrictive. Unlimited mileage cover will let you drive your taxi as much as you like.
  • Courtesy taxi – If you are involved in an accident then a courtesy taxi will be provided so you can continue to work.
  • Cover for loss of keys – If disaster does strike, charges associated with replacement locks and keys and onward transport will be covered by your insurer.

Are There any Exclusions Taxi Insurance Does Not Cover?

There are a number of risks that taxi insurance policies will not typically cover. That includes:

  • Drivers under the age of 25 – Most policies do not cover taxi drivers under this age. However, as industry specialists, we will usually be able to find cover for drivers of any age, particularly if you have a clean driving industry.
  • Theft of the vehicle if the keys are left in the taxi – Due to the nature of the job, drivers may sometimes leave the taxi with the keys in the ignition. If the vehicle is stolen in such circumstances then you will not be covered.
  • Working outside the specified region – You may not be covered if you pick up fares outside of the region laid out in your policy.
